![]() ![]() But adding a ship type that relies on never being seen or shot at means less surface targets for artillery ships to shoot at. The core gameplay loop of this game is artillery salvos against other surface ships, with torpedoes as a second alternative. Pumping torpedo after torpedo into back line stragglers just means you've spent entirely too much time crossing the map to get to said back line and you're slowly whittling down someone who arguably isn't even a worthwhile target in the battles that decide the game.Īnother significant problem is the dilution of surface targets. But the submarine that takes advantage of this often does so to the detriment of teamplay. And thus you have the fast ships speeding off, slower ships left behind, you get the idea. Everybody wants support, nobody wants to be support. Teamplay ostensibly counters submarines but nobody wants to play as a team. Theoretically the 'hunts stragglers' and 'teamplay stops submarines' gameplay is a good idea, but in practise in the chaos of online pick up games, it doesn't work like that. Even destroyers can make a mistake and still retreat to lick their wounds, and even an unspotted destroyer still has to be weary of radar, hydro and area-denial torpedoes. It's the only ship type in this game with those extremes, to that level. I exaggerate slightly, but you get the idea. A submarine underwater is nigh untouchable, a submarine on the surface is as survivable as a snowball in an inferno. Underwater UFOs with speeds that would rip the historical boats apart if forced to go that fast. They had to be buffed beyond any semblance of historicity and realism in order to shoe-horn them into a 20 minute action format. Or, as per video, every peg in a square hole. I see them as a square peg in a round hole. That's not down to powerlevel but gameplay implementation. ![]() I believe they are roughly tuned right, on a basis of powerlevel. I also do not think they're perfectly tuned. But after some time, here are my personal thoughts. I've long avoided really entering the discussion about submarines as I wasn't quite sure how I felt about them. ![]()
